This is a really basic outfit, but I thought I’d show you the sort of look I go for if I am home for the day, and let’s be honest, can actually be bothered dressing properly!  When I don’t bother I opt for the Mom uniform of trackies and a plain top, but otherwise this outfit is my go~to style.  Simple skirt, easy knit top, and a belt for a little bit of extra oomph!{And to hide the mess that is my post~baby belly… > <}  

To be sure, you usually would see me swap out my saddle shoes for my slippers, but I thought that would look just a bit too scruffy, so shoes it is… : P    I thrifted this skirt along with my navy skirt & another purple one.  The three are made out of the same jersey material in the same style and shape and I love them!  I wear the teal and purple one at home because even though you can’t really see it in the pictures they are a bit worn and plooky so they are my around~the~house vintage. : ) 

I am also quite enjoying my pony tail hairstyle as well ~ I think it helps to keep the ‘grandma’ outfits a little more fresh and youthful ~ kind of like a teen 1950’s style.  I know it’s the standard “don’t know what to do with my hair” style, but I think when I am so dressed up anyway it does help to balance out the dressiness.   Which begs the question, is there any point to trying to dress down the dressed up style?  I don’t know.  I really like some of the casual vintage wear I’ve seen around, like cigarette pants, high waisted jeans, bandannas in the hair, etc. 

I haven’t quite got into the sporty/casual vintage just yet as I really don’t have any pants that would work, but I think I would like to try it someday!  *sigh*  If only I could some how acquire ninja sewing skills over night… There is so much I still have to learn!!! = x =’  Anyway, I’ll stop sulking over my decided lack of sewing skills and just DO some sewing!  Husband is helping draft my circle skirt pattern {yes, I am behind, but I didn’t have the materials I needed until Tuesday this week} and I shall hopefully catch up with everyone else next week.  I have to draft my pattern, cut out my fabric and then do whatever Casey has planned the week.  *Whew!*  I really don’t know where all my time disappears to, but it vanishes as swiftly as a footprint washed away by a wave….

The biggest testimony to the swift passage of time?  Theodore!  He is fifteen weeks old as of yesterday, which is 3 months and one week old already.  o___o   It’s crazy how big he is getting, and I am enjoying every day with him.  He smiles whenever I come to pick him up from a nap, giggles and laughs at his dad{and me!}, has tummy time without screaming now and can even roll over onto his back! 

He also has the biggest bald spot on the back of his head and likes to squawk like a strangled rooster now that he has discovered he can pitch his voice, but he is a really happy baby most of the time and that just fills my heart with joy.  And look how cute he is when he’s asleep!

Quick Share ~ History of Fashion Through Dance

Fun fashion & dance!

I found this quirky video through Beta Boutique Vintage ~ and it’s seriously so cute that I just had to share!  I love the early fashions/dances obviously, but it’s interesting to see how it all evolves.   My only complaint is that they change costume a little too fast to get a real sense of the clothes, but the outfits you see are super, and the dances are amusing so it’s well worth a watch!  Enjoy ~

Zentangle Inspiration

I was surfing the Net when I came across an art form called Zentangles, and was instantly intrigued.  Basically, Zentangle art is a method of creating an image through repetition of patterns and lines.  It’s simple and easy and anyone can do it because there are no rules besides repetition ~ Zentangles are just that ~ a tangle.  I thought the concept was pretty cool and wanted to try it out myself.  Just as I suspected, it’s quite relaxing and fun! 

I think that doing this kind of “doodle” art is actually a great way to unwind and clear your head.  Plus, there’s some well cool patterns out there that you can get ‘instructions’ for.  And the fantastic thing about Zentangle art is that you don’t need to have any drawing experience or skills ~ you just pick up a pen and go!  You could do this:

Mine aren’t quite as pretty or polished as some of the lovely tangles out there, that’s okay.  I am going to keep doing these just for the fun of it!  Plus, when I want to draw and can’t think of anything to do{yay, artist’s block…}, a tangle is a great way to get started.

CSSA ~ Do the Circle Skirt Swirl!

I may be a little bit behind everyone else, but I have been busy browsing Bing images to figure out what sort of details I would like to add to my circle skirt for Casey’s Circle Skirt Sew~Along.  Here are a few pictures that particularly caught my eye ~

I have already decided that I would like two patch pockets on the front of the skirt, and then I got to thinking that maybe little bit of embroidery on each pocket would be just the thing to finish it off!  I have been really inspired by Katie from The Little Red Squirrel ~ she has embroidered some lovely pin ups on her skirt and it looks fab!

Quick Share ~ Top 5 Nail Tips

Jaci from You’ve Got Nail is very knowledgeable and has gorgeous nails so when she gives out her 5 top tips for keeping your nails in tip~top shape you know I am going to sit up and listen!  My personal favourite piece of advice is to stop using your nails as tools, i.e. don’t pick at sticky tape, your other nails, use them like a screw driver….  Okay, so the last two crimes are my very own, { –___-‘ } so that just goes to show how badly I treat them.  Well, no longer!   For more tips please check out the rest of her post.

Nail Art ~ Blue Lagoon

Before we get to the good stuff I just had to share this amazing diagram I found on Pintrest yesterday.  And the best thing about this is that it works!  I used the technique it depicts when I did this manicure and proceeded to paint the neatest job I have ever managed to achieve…   See ~

I am really loving solid cream polishes at the moment. This lovely blue by BYS is more of a sky or bluebird blue rather than an aqua ~ so it’s a bit misnamed in my opinion, but it’s still a gorgeous colour.  And as always, any excuse to add a bit of sparkle to my nails in the form of these tiny deco gems is more than welcome!

I really enjoy creating nail art ~ there is something about the small, temporary canvases that are your finger nails that holds a strong appeal to the artist in me.  I am not sure whether it’s the limited space, or the myriad of different colours you can use, or the multitude of looks that you can create, or the fact that you can start anew any time you like. 

Either one of those reasons are good enough for me ~ I like to give myself a manicure whenever I can{which isn’t always as often as I would like these days!}  It is somewhat of weekly ritual now, so of course my polish collection is slowly expanding!  I am keeping my eye out for a good light purple polish, because I don’t have one yet.  I am really craving lilacs and duck egg teals, and of course you can never go wrong with fairy floss pink.  Pastels are great for spring and I think they work really well with a vintage wardrobe as you can see from this delightful 1950s Revlon ad.

…Now it is time to get rid of the make up and give my hard working skin a bit of pep.  I don't have any face masks ot anything in so I decided to make my own.  Most commercial products these days lay claim to being enriched with honey or various plant extracts - so why not go straight for the store cupboard or the garden for your skincare? Also, being a vintage gal I love the "making do" aspect of home made skincare…

I’ve really got to do better with moving things out of frame in my photos ~ the last two outfit shoots there have been things that are distracting in the pictures that I could have moved and saved myself the annoyance! 

Anyway, don’t you just love this tree?  We have an amazing amount of ornamental plum trees around our area and I just adore them in flower!  I call them cherry trees even though I am 99% certain they are not; simply because they look like the cherry trees I see photos of.  Spring is definitely making itself known down under; I have a plethora of violets in my front yard that I am enjoying, and with all the trees budding and blossoming I am already dreaming about summer…  Blue skies, sunshine and pretty frocks {that I have to sew myself..   > < }.  It will be fantastic. 

Something else I am loving is finding vintage~styled modern wear.  I think this top looks wonderfully 1940~ish, but the tag says Tempt, which incidentally, is one of my favourite RTW shops.  I think it’s great that vintage is really trending ~ it means that you can stock up on gorgeous repo, wear it all the time and not have to worry about destroying your really old vintage items.  This is particularly relevant when you have a 14 week old baby. {Yes, Theodore is 14 weeks old now; it goes sooo fast!!}  Mind you, it’s also a bit of a pain because it means that the price of real vintage items sky rocket, but you can’t have everything. 

Speaking of babies ~ I can’t get over how much my figure has changed since Theodore arrived.  I have hips now!  Sometimes I am okay with it, and sometimes I hate it, but at the moment I am slimming in the of hopes loosing a few extra kilos that I have been carrying. 

I am doing the Atkins low carb, high protein diet, but I am also considering it to be a detox.  Seriously, I am going through terrible sugar withdrawals!  I have been experiencing low energy and major cravings.  Gah.  It’s awful, which only shows how badly I need to do it to get off my addiction. : S  I am currently snacking on Brie cheese and macadamia nuts.  Not bad, but definitely no substitute for chocolate….  : P

I am hoping I can make it in one piece; 4 days down and 10 more to go.  *dies*

Introducing Charlotte & The CSSA

 

I am so excited for the Circle Skirt Sew~Along being hosted by Casey of Elegant Musings.  I was one of the readers who voted for the skirt in the last sew~along; {the swing dress won out though} and I am so glad that Casey has decided to do it now because it is the perfect timing! 

And this is why….

My very own beautiful, much sort after, vintage Bernina 830 sewing machine has finally arrived!   I bought this pretty little thing off Ebay, after much anxiety and stress {I am just going put it out there ~ I HATE auctions on Ebay….  They always make me soooo nervous!  This time it was so bad Husband had to bid for me!!  >  < } it was packaged up and sent off to me.  Yay!  *does a dance*  \ > U < / 

It is my very great pleasure to introduce you to Charlotte, my long awaited sewing companion ~

Isn’t she gorgeous?  She’s got all her parts, feet, bobbins, cases, instruction manual, etc., and she purrs like a kitten.  I’ve only done test run, but boy, oh, boy am I ever so excited to tackle my first project on my first ever sewing machine!  Which {if I don’t get too ahead of myself and jump the gun} should be a tea party length, self drafted circle skirt in a pretty pink rose and black polka dot on a white cotton fabric. 

It’s nice and light and perfect for spring/summer which is coming up all too fast around here.  I am itching to start sewing some vintage inspired pieces for my summer wardrobe; I hope to complete at least one shirt dress to wear before the end of the year. It’s all super thrilling! 

Anyway, I shall keep you all updated with my progress with the Circle Skirt Sew~Along as I get on with it.  Wish me luck; I think I’ll need it!!

How to ~ Make a wrist rest

In conjunction with my Quick Share post about RSI yesterday, I thought I would put up a tutorial on how to create your own wrist rest.  You know, one of those thingys that you rest your arm/wrist on when you are using your mouse?  I have no idea if wrist rest is the proper term, but that’s what I’ve got so… Yeah.   Let’s begin!    *warning*  It’s a picture heavy post, but this is really easy to make and it doesn’t take that long.  Promise!  ^ u ^

Gather your materials:

~ A solid square/rectangular shape to use as the base.  This can be made out of wood, plastic, polystyrene, anything you have on hand.  I had a small wooden block 7cm long x 4cm wide x 3cm deep that I used

IMPORTANT EDIT ~ After using this for a while I realized the problem is not so much my wrist as the height of my chair!  I made my chair higher and now my wrist rest is too high, : (  so I have turned it into a pincushion.   You might want to make sure your chair is right before you start your project, and make your wrist rest much smaller ~ about 2cm or so. : )

~  Stuffing

~  Material to cover the block & stuffing

~  Thick cardboard

~  Felt

~  Glue Gun

~ Sewing Kit; needle, thread, scissors, ruler, material pencil/pen

~  Any decorations you want to add {sorry, this isn’t in the photo as I decided to add mine last minute!}

Step 1:  Use your block to measure a square of material.  Leave a good amount of excess so it can wrap around the block and the stuffing.

Step 2:  Use the block to measure a piece of thick cardboard.  This is going on the bottom later on, so cut it out and put it aside. 

Step 3:  Place stuffing in the middle of the material square with the block on top. 

Step 4:  Pin the edges of the material together and sew or glue according to your preference.

Step 5:  On the end of the block fold the top of the material down, then fold over the left side and then the right so that it crosses over neatly and makes a point. 

Step 6:  Pin your material in place and sew or glue the loose fabric to the bottom of the block{sorry, I forgot to get a photo of this!}.

Step 7:  Now we are going to use the cardboard and the felt to make a nice base for the wrist rest.  Place your felt against the long side of the block and measure how high up you want it to sit.  I decided on two centimetres for mine.

Step 8:  Using the piece of cardboard you cut out earlier, mark around it leaving a gap the width that you measured in step 7.  So I mark around my cardboard piece leaving 2cm on every side.  Then cut out the felt.

Step 9:  Now I decided to put scallops down the long edges of my felt to make it look pretty.  I free cut mine, but if you want to measure them for neater results you can mark little dots 1cm apart ~ this is the width of your scallops.  Make the marks 1cm in from the edge of the felt and that’s the depth. 

Step 10:  Cut out your scallops.  I folded the felt in half to make the job quicker.

Step 11:  Glue the cardboard onto the bottom of your wrist rest.  It should cover all the material you stitched/glued down and not stick out past the edges of the wrist rest.

Step 12:  Glue the wrist rest to the middle of your felt.

Step 13:  Glue the long edges to the sides of your wrist rest. 

Step 14:  Fold the ends of the long sides over the short edge. 

Step 15:  Glue the folds down so that it sits nice and flat. 

Step 16:  Glue on any extra decorations.  I decided to go with these ribbon roses, one on each end.  Now you’re all done!!  Enjoy your pretty new wrist rest and save your aching muscles.
