How to ~ A guide for seaming a knitted cardigan

I was so eager to finish off my last {and first!} knitted cardigan that I didn’t bother blocking it, or learning how to seam it properly.  While the ribbing is very forgiving, and has settled down nicely into the shape I wanted, I thought that for my next cardigan I should learn a few more tricks for finishing a knitted garment.

IMG_20120419_101807  IMG_20120619_101626

First off:  how to block a cardigan using wet blocking, or spray/steam blocking techniques.   Blocking is done at the end of the knitting process, usually before seaming a pieced garment. Here’s an article detailing the benefits of blocking and which fibers respond to what kinds of blocking ~ To Block or Not to Block, as well as a video on how to do the three different methods.

Then, you can seam it together with your choice of stitch style. This video is great in demonstrating how to set a sleeve in.

This one is good for stockinette shoulder seams.

And this website has some great knitting and finishing tips, including this great little video on mattress stitch, which is good for doing up side seams.

I hope you find these resources helpful.

Amazing 1940s fashions!

I love this fashion video from the archive at Glamour Daze ~ the clothes are really cute and I do so like the circle skirt playsuit!  I am thinking I shall have to see if I can sew up a set for myself come summer.  If you want a better look at some of the outfits, there are some neat stills from the video here.  Enjoy!

Quick Share ~ Run Rabbit, Run, Run, Run!

The sheep chasing rabbit called Champis

It seems like this blog is deteriorating, or perhaps improving, depending on your point of view, into a place of pretty clothes and cute animals….  Well, I have no complaints about that!  This latest video is super cute if you ask me; a rabbit that likes to herd/chase sheep.  It’s so precious.  > ω <

I don’t know how many of you watch the show, I myself have only seen the first season and I must confess I find the program a little silly; I mean, do they really have to keep on making clichéd, stupid mistakes over and over again?

That being said, somehow the whole thing is still rather addictive and I love the music!  I did find this spoof really amusing, so watch and enjoy.  ᵔᴗᵔ

Konad Nail Art Tutorial

Pretty nails! > w <

Konad_1

~ * * ~  The finished manicure  ~ * * ~

Polish Details:  N.Y.C. Color in Redhead

Top Tip:  Use a top coat over the Konad to make the nail art last longer.  You want to be super careful applying a top coat though, because it is very easy to smear the designs.  I find if you use a big blob of top coat and only stroke over each part of the nail once, the designs stay reasonably intact.  My favourite top coat is Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri Anti-Chip Top Coat.  You can buy it at supermarkets, pharmacies, or online here.

I have listed everything I used in the video for easy reference.  You can find everything you need regarding the stamping kit at wowsocool.com. A basic starter kit would involve:

~  a stamper and scraper {which you can buy together}; make sure you get the double sided stamper kit as the smaller side can be really useful for transferring smaller designs with precision.
~  a stamping/design plate
~  a Konad polish

Other useful tools:

~  Nail polish remover
~  Cotton pads for removing nail polish
~  Paper towel, newspaper, anything that can get messy and protect the surface you are working on

I hope the tutorial explains the technique of stamping nail art clearly for you.  If you have any further questions please feel free to put them as a comment or email me bonita{at}bdotdepictions.com> ω <

Quick Share ~ History of Fashion Through Dance

Fun fashion & dance!

I found this quirky video through Beta Boutique Vintage ~ and it’s seriously so cute that I just had to share!  I love the early fashions/dances obviously, but it’s interesting to see how it all evolves.   My only complaint is that they change costume a little too fast to get a real sense of the clothes, but the outfits you see are super, and the dances are amusing so it’s well worth a watch!  Enjoy ~

Keeping Well Dressed ~ Charm School Part 1

Video curtesy of Glamour Daze

I have been greatly inspired by Lottie of Lottie Loves and her Finishing School posts.  Her tips on grooming, posture and more, help to polish your appearance and conduct into a ladylike manner, as well as giving you self~confidence.

But Lottie is not alone in her quest for greater finish in every day life.  Across the wide web there are lots of vintage ladies addressing modern day casualness with flair all of their own and answering the questions I find myself pondering.

What classifies as well dressed lady these days?   Is elegance something to be striven for only if you are walking a red carpet or can we infuse it in to everyday living?

When I look back on the past and at all the vintage fashions that I adore, things like darling hats and gloves with stockings and a neat purse add such chic to the outfits they wear.

Now a days we don’t wear gloves or stockings all the time, but sometimes we will pop a hat on top.  Most of the time when I think well dressed, I think brand names.  So Chanel, or Jimmy Choos and therefore, not necessarily the appearance of the clothes, but rather how close to designer fashion they are.

Still, I think that there are lessons we can learn from from the ladies of the past, so that no matter the brand or style of the clothes we choose to wear day to day, we can still look classy and elegant ~ in essence, well put together.  It does not take much money, but it does take thought, time and effort.  Do we always have the time to do this?

I know I don’t.  But I try every day and I think in the end that’s what others will see.  Hopefully you will also be inspired to try to be well dressed.  After all, the idea of polish is more than simply fashion and the clothes you wear, it is an attitude.

I think it is an attitude of care and confidence knowing that you did your best to look your best.  No one can give more than their best, but when they do, it always works.  And I think that this attitude is found in those that are always well dressed, no matter the occasion.  What do you think?

Dig it up; my thrifting treasures!

HappyFeet

~ *   Happy feet!  A sneak preview of a pair of shoes in my video * ~

Yay! Thrifting!

So this is a mixed bag of thrifting jaunts ~ I bought the shoes in Perth, and the clothes in Canberra.   Mostly the clothing came from a thrifting expedition that was, in reality, a complete fail!

I had a mission to find some curtains {our poor house looks very naked with all the bare windows!} and ended up with a everything BUT curtains…..   A lamp, a wardrobe for baby’s things, clothing for me.  Yup, no curtains.

Still I had some great finds, so all’s well it ends well yes?

Old and New Older Handbags

Random screen shot curtsey of Youtube!! > >’

I will not add much more to this post as I am pretty sure you have probably heard enough from me for the moment { I do ramble on don’t I?  > O < }  but I just want to say that I will be posting the results of my poll soon.

Five people have voted so far {yay for you!}, but I am afraid that the results will not really represent what everyone wants to see.   Or maybe you do not mind?   Anyway, if you want to put in a word, pleeease do:  I really do want to hear what you have to say.

P.S. ~   A big fat sorry from me as this is a technically an extremely late post.  No, I did not forget to post on Tuesday ~ this video was supposed to be up then but I have had some {!!!} technical difficulties.  I had to rerecord 3 times and then it would not upload to YouTube properly.  It has taken me two days and two nights of trying to upload this video to finally get it posted!  Sometimes tech is such a pain.  T ^ T

Vintage Goodies! ~ Vlog 1

Vintage goodies galore…..

As I said in the video, this is my first vlog post.  I did put up a video a while ago, but it was just a short clip of the plum blossoms outside my window.  This is first real face time recording!  Pretty scary stuff…

I tell you what, that black, unblinking eye {camera lens} can be darn intimidating.   And unfortunately, my video editing software is less than great, so I did not get the best editing jobs done.   But I think the end product turned out ok anyway; at least I hope so!

Do let me know what you think ~ should I create more video posts?  They are fun, but kind of hard to do.  Actually, I am glad for my Toastmasters and Journalism training, because I would have found that a lot harder if I had not practised public impromptu speaking and broadcast anchoring.

Yay for university!    >  <    Yay for trying something new!  Oh, and did you like Ichi~Chan, my strawberry takochou?  He was thrilled to be in the video, and wants me to do more things that he can be in, so keep your eye out for him!  I am not sure where he will pop up next, but I am certain he will be around.  ^ __ ^
