Flower Hair Clip ~ Equip Hazy Daisy Earrings & Broach ~ Acorn & Will Rose Bracelet ~ Equip Vintage 50s{?} Dress ~ Thrifted Petticoat ~ Thrifted
~ * ♥ * ~
So this is obviously what I wore when we went on our Coastal Road Trip not last weekend but the weekend before that.
I really have no idea if this dress is from the fifties, or maybe the early to mid sixties, but there are a few things that make me believe that it could be actually vintage and not just 70s~does~50s or something of the like.
The first thing is the self~fabric belt that matches the dress, and the twisted thread belt loops that you find in a lot of older dresses. Plus, the shoulder gathers and yoke seem to me to be a very 1940s style, and add a skirt cut on the bias and I am fairly certain I could date this dress as early 50s; a bit before the new look style really took off. However, I cannot really be 100% sure ~ do you have any better ideas what era it’s from?
Whatever the case, I do like this dress. The cotton/poly blend fabric is really nice and floaty, but I think I might take in in under the arms though. The bodice is just tad to loose and bulky looking for my taste. It makes me feel like the dress does nothing for my figure, and naturally I don’t want that!
I do love the soft ivory~blonde yellow colour though, which actually surprises me because I didn’t think that I would be all that keen on it when I first thrifted the dress. It’s crazy, but my wardrobe has evolved so much since I started blogging. I always used to go for black, grey or red, but now I am branching out with a veritable rainbow of colours!
I still have a particular style; rich, deep jewel tones or soft, baby pastels are my favourite shades, but any colour seems to go these days ~ everything except orange…. I still don’t think I will ever like that hue unlike my adoration for pink! I never thought I’d see the day when my wardrobe would be mostly a variety of colour with a healthy, but definitely minority, section of black/grey. It just goes to show that anything is possible! ; P

I must confess, I was completely mesmerised by the settings in which you took these photos. It's absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYes, Surf Beach is a really lovely spot; and there's always a lot of pretty shells to collect as well which is well cool! I have a massive shell collection that I always am trying to convince myself that I will do something with one of these days... > <
ReplyDeletewhat wonderful photos! You look absolutely lovely and I adore these pretty pictures and the stunning setting!
ReplyDeleteThanks Karolina! It's always fun to work with such a gorgeous setting I must confess, it makes your photo taking that much more interesting. :D
ReplyDeleteHi. Found your blog via Sew Retro. If you're certain about the cotton/polyester content of the fabric, then this dress would likely be 1970s and later '70s at that. Polyester didn't appear in clothing until the '60s and wasn't that common until the second half of that decade. Looking at your photos, the dress has other features perfectly consistent with the 1970s: gathers at the shoulders and no darts at the waist. If you have elastic at the waist, that's another indicator. The self-fabric belt on thread loops doesn't tell much. We certainly had that on clothing forever. I guess what I'm saying is that your photos make it look like a later 1970s dress. One thing to start looking for in vintage pieces is the fabric content label. Later decades (not '40s and '50s) will have separate fabric content labels that are often white with printed information (which may have worn away through laundering). And if you find those content labels in side seams, then the piece is probably much more recent.
ReplyDelete--Paloverde (who loves the end of the '60s and the first half of the '70s because those were my high school and college years)
Ah, thanks Paloverde! That's very helpful information. : D
